Navigating an Identity Crisis: Style Edition

- By L.S.P

The common misconception with one’s vogue { vogue; the prevailing fashion or style at a particular time } is that it has to fall within one particular fad. The society we live in today accelerates at a fast pace, and we, as people, tend to change at the same speed. Everyone is guilty of trying to keep up with trends, so much so that we’re left chasing them. Your choice of fashion is a depiction of who you are. It ensures that you stand out in a world full of people who are just trying to make it, the same as you and I. To make things a little easier, I’ve created a step-by-step guide on how to establish your personal style, be it outrageously weird or everyday athleisure.

  1. Decipher what you desire

Today, everyone is concerned about their self-image and if it’s trendy enough. Girl, your style belongs to you… own it! If that brightly colored cardigan you tried on at the thrift store made you feel good, buy it. Pick items you feel a connection with and build your wardrobe around them. Remember, a piece of clothing in your sacred wardrobe is just an item; it's the way you style it that counts.

  1. Harmonize your closet and your lifestyle

Curate closet pieces that resonate with your likes. Once that’s out of the way, grab a drink and take a break because the hard part is done. Keep track of what’s currently trending and incorporate that into your personal style. Find a balance between your fashion identity and the current craze. Don’t let yourself fall victim to a consumer mentality, purchasing every trendy item in sight. Stay true to yourself, always.

  1. Update your closet

When it comes to your clothes, suddenly, you’re a hoarder with attachment issues. I know girl, I get it. But, hear me out… do you really need that shirt you bought three years ago? Let’s keep it real, there are dozens of new pieces that are eager to call your closet home. Take that leap of faith and clear out your closet. We’re making room for the new you. Who knows what she looks like or what she wants?

  1. Incorporate your style into your lifestyle

Integrate your newfound style into your surrounding environment. Whether it be accessorizing your furbaby to match your aesthetic or simply adding personal touches to your home. Try adding little trinkets and decor that’s suited to the new you. Start off small so as not to get overwhelmed, and work your way up to your coveted aesthetic lifestyle. Therefore, your style becomes second nature. You aren't left with unanswered questions consuming your subconscious thoughts; it becomes instinctual. You know and love your personal style.
